Hidden voices from Valle del Lecrín

Soundscape - Valle del Lecrín

The project is a scientific approach research in Valle del Lecrín. Data on temperature, humidity and tributary flow was collected through an esp32 that sent sensor data to a Google database; recordings were also made of the sounds of this Valley to build a database and sound archive.

With this compilation of data and sounds, an intervention and a sculptural vibrational piece were created: The live coding intervention was performed with Tidal Cycles for sound and Hydra for visuals. The database was transformed into sounds that built a soundscape together with the sound archive and the visuals interacted with these. The sculptural piece consisted of a nest built with dried lemon branches that at its center contained a small water pool, in which the audios taken from the valley were reproduced as well as the database transformed to low wavelengths which had vibrational effects on the water. On the opening day, both the intervention and the piece were shown at the Church of Lecrín.

In contemporary times our perception is in a certain way mediated by technology, we are interpreting our world through algorithms. These are becoming a kind of translators of non-humans (in Bruno Latour's terms). If we observe our emerging ecologies (bots and algorithms, tributaries, volcanoes, animals, plants, etc.) it can be observed that they increasingly have agency capacity in sociocultural and political terms. Thus the interpretation through databases and the reproduction of Valle de Lecrín sounds aims to be the voice of non-humans and an aesthetic interpretation to approach a possible interspecies listening.
